Preserving the past, designing for a growing future

North Ryde House is a considered transformation of an existing 1960’s mid century residence — a full interior and exterior concept designed to bring in light, improve flow, and create space for a growing family.

Our clients wanted more living area, additional bedrooms, and a stronger connection to the outdoors, without unnecessary demolition or waste. The vision was to work intelligently with what was already there — retaining the ground floor kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom in their original locations to reduce cost and material wastage, while extending and reconfiguring where it mattered most.

The challenge lay in reshaping a triangular property within bush fire zoning requirements, balancing sustainability, safety, and design cohesion. By removing the existing rear extension, we were able to open up the backyard and rethink the relationship between house and garden. An outdoor entertaining area and pool further enhance the sense of openness, visually expanding the property.

A northern side extension now floods the new living area with natural light, while a seamless connection to the existing northern-facing front and side garden strengthens the relationship between inside and out. A first-floor addition introduces new bedrooms, providing the space and flexibility needed for modern family life. The façade has been tastefully renovated to retain the character of the 1930s home, introducing sustainable cladding and timber elements that complement the original architecture while adding a contemporary, durable finish. Double-glazed windows improve thermal performance, and all new materials have been carefully chosen for longevity and sustainability, with non-combustible external finishes ensuring bush fire compliance.

The result is a home that feels lighter, more spacious, and future-focused — thoughtfully extended, harmonising heritage and contemporary living.

“Nx Studio found solutions we hadn’t considered. The house feels completely transformed, yet still practical and grounded.”
